switchblade laws in California?

To sum up the story on the 4th of July my 7 year old cousin found a knife and i put it in my jacket pocket not thinking about how stupid that is. Later my friends and i drove to csv to use the restroom and we get pulled over. The jacket was in the in the backseat of the can and the police found it, i was riding in driver passenger seat. after about 15 mins thy decided its the it was a switchblade. To describe the knife it is about 4 inch blade and i be leave is is made by echo. it has a thumb stud attached to the blade that opens it. the reason the are charging me with this. I am only 19 and have not been arrested be for, if it is possible to fight this in any way please help. If i get fined it will be near impossible for me to pay it alongside that my parents would kick me out. So please if anyone knows information that can help me that would be much appreciated.

If you have to overcome some resistance to open the knife, then it is not a switchblade as defined in Pen C 653k. However, 85-623 is not a state statute number, but may be some local ordinance which may, or may not, be enforceable. If you tell me the city you were in when arrested, I can check that. (I don’t recognize the abbreviation “CSV.”) There may also be issues concerning the search of the jacket, unless you gave permission. An attorney can help you with that question. If this is a misdemeanor charge (653k is a misdemeanor), and you cannot afford counsel, one will be appointed for you.
