have case xx KNIVES ever not had a serial number?

i just bought a case xx knife and it has no serial number and the steel that its made of looks like chrome or a real polished stainless steel. So its supposed to be old when did people start to polish the steel to make it mirrored? And also the first question i asked to. thanks i wish i had a picture but i lost my usb cord for my camera its about 12 inches long and looks like a butcher knife. The wood handle looks old but the blade doesn’t look very old. Thanks for any help and on the blade the steel looks like it has a wave in it idk could you just tell me all you know about it thanks for your help

I checked a Case knife I bought over 30 years ago and it has a number at the base of the blade. 216-5 I don’t know if that’s a serial or model number. Mine also has that highly polished surface.
