Stormtroopers vs Red Indians?

The year is 1918. Germany invades the southwestern US to prevent the Doughboys helping the Brits and French on the Western Front. They easily defeat the regular army but the local Indians aren’t happy with these foreign invaders on their land. They sharpen their scalping KNIVES, put on warpaint and prepare for battle.

German sturmpioneer: Mauser rifles, lugers, Bergman sub-machineguns, potato masher grenades, anti-tank rifles, lightweight mortar, flamethrower, saw-back knives and sharpened entrenching tools

Native Americans: various hunting rifles, bows, Tomahawks, Winchester rifles, knives, spears and some weapons captured following an earlier skirmish with the Germans.

Who wins?

Do you have to be such a jerk David H? If you think alternative history is so “stupid” why bother answering?

The question is really about what would happen if modern weapons were used against a less technologically developed indigenous population.

This battle has already been thought. It was called American colonisation. This re-asserted an underpinning military reality. It does not matter what the technological level of the defenders. Numbers have a quality all of their own.

So the outcome would depend upon the size of the invasion. In order to have a chance against America, you would need at least 20 – 30 divisions. In which case the American indians are going to be overrun. However, if it is a more modest company level, then the most that the indians can hope to achieve is a delaying tactic. They would lose a war of attrition. So hit and run tactics, similar to the resistance against Dass Reich in 44, would be the best.

If the numbers were similar, then the home advantage goes to the indians. Unfortunately, by 1918 the American indian would not be able to field many true braves. Plenty of young hopefuls, but the warior cast was sadly depleted by this time. However, an army on the move is vulnerable, so attacking the lines of supply is the best option.

Unfortunately, without modern weopons at their disposal, the indians would not do too well. If you look at the plains indians, they had access to rifles. At the battle of Little Big Horn, historians had shown that the indians had more weopons than the US cavalry. For every round the 7th fired, I think they got four or five back. But by 1918 the indian wars had been over for some time.

I would have to go with the Germans in the short term, until the US army could mobilise. Then all that the Germans could hope to achieve is to tie up US troops until they are overun, unless they went in with enough divisions, which they didn’t have, because they were all on the western front. In that instance, they should have been able to do a lot of damage until the Army could mobilise.

In short, I don’t buy this as a scenario.
