Is it legal to carry a knife in Illinois?
I work at a grocery store and normally I would use a box cutter, but for last two weeks there has been no whatever. Now I have a pocket knife that normally carry around for my other work landscape work. The sheet is so long as my palm and it is not a reed switch is, I have to touch the blade open. Now for my work at the supermarket is legal to carry with me and use it to misc. Open boxes and so on. I would appreciate it if a cop or someone involved in the law could answer this question. Oh, and I live in suburban Chicago is that it helps. Thanks in advance.
Illnois has some laws on KNIVES, but because it is in Chicago, becomes subject to the laws specific to Chicago, that are more restrictive. First, the "width of the palm" is irrelevant. As any law in this manner anywhere, just a stupid urban legend that even some police subscribe. The law measures in inches. In short, in Chicago, if you are 19 years and above, can lead to a single blade pocket knife folding a sheet of no more than 2.5 inches long. If you are 18 years or less, must be less than 2 inches long. You may want to check with your supervisor and some companies allow employees to carry any knife. However, seeing that gives box cutters, use it for a work task, and the law only allows a small piece anyway, I doubt it will be a problem.
