Kitchen KNIVES – Various Blade Materials

When looking to buy a new kitchen knife set, it is important to know the knife blades of different materials are made. Blades can be made of titanium ceramic, various types of steel and even plastic. Read on for a run-down on the different materials and their proper use.

Steel is by far the most common material used. Carbon steel consists mainly of iron and carbon. It is cheap and can hold an advantage. The disadvantage is that carbon steel is prone to oxidation and discoloration. carbon steel plates must be dried and cleaned after each use. Stainless steel consists mainly of iron and has a high chromium content. Low-carbon stainless steel is mainly used in cheaper sets of knives. Low carbon Steel is often used for serrated knife sets, because this type of steel is difficult to sharpen.

High-carbon stainless steel is more expensive so often used in games better knife. These films are able to maintain an advantage and are not prone to oxidation and discoloration. In essentially combines the finer points of carbon steel and stainless steel, while eliminating the negatives. Many high-end blades add small amounts of other alloys to further increase the durability and sharpness.

There are a couple of different methods used to manufacture steel sheets. The two most common are forged or stamped. Stamped blades are cut from large sheets of steel and then heat-treated and sharp. forged blades are made of a piece of steel to be hit in the shape of the leaf. forged blades tend to be on the heavy side compared to the printed sheets.

Titanium knives are lighter and less prone to wear. They are usually expensive and have no or a fine edge. For the money it cost to get a titanium set, you can buy a much better game of high carbon stainless steel knives.

rolled steel sheets combine hard and brittle with harder steel to form a layered sheet. A good laminated sheet of hard steel will be carried out by a sharp edge surrounded by layers of harder steel. laminated sheets have a very sharp edge that normally stays sharp longer than other types of metal.

There are a couple of types of non-metallic plates on the market. Ceramic knives are a relative newcomer to the world of cutlery. While it may seem a strange material to make a knife, ceramic can be sharpened to an edge that lasts a long time. They are also free of corrosion, but are likely to jump and break if dropped or bumped against a hard surface. plastic knives are another option for those seeking a non-metal sheet. Plastic is not sharp enough to cut much more than fruits and vegetables.

Choose material that suits your needs. I'm partial to the leaves of high quality laminated steel sheets or high carbon steel used in Japanese. I like the way cut and tend to have an advantage as well. No matter what type of material you choose, you're good to go armed with some knowledge.
