A horror movie involving a boy and his dog?

I remember watching this horror movie when I was younger. Do not remember much him, but I think it was this guy (maybe on Halloween? I think the movie was playing on the night of Halloween) that was in a house with his dog (A golden retriever, I think?) And someone tried to kill him. Some scenes that I remember specifically: – Go to the kitchen and found a butter knife covered in blood – is lying in bed and close your eyes and "see" something about how someone is going to kill? I think probably there was a scene of phone out there too. – Me According to him trying to get your dog to check it out, but the dog only barks when the bad guy is nearby. The film can not be a straight slasher film or anything, I have a feeling that may have been the horror comedy. Not sure. Sorry for the vague description, which was a while ago!

could be "vigilant" with Corey Haim. It is the only horror movie I can think of with a gold Retiever. Great book, bad movie.
