Is it a mortal sin to hold a knife?

Hello I have been alone at home today and heard a door close and I was scared a little. So I have a kitchen knife and heard some noises above. So I went upstairs with a knife in case someone had come in search of protection. I do not use only to threaten. Was it a mortal sin?

LOL I hope you do not accidentally stabbing his mother or anything. The commandment not to kill death and murder and the defense are different things. King David was a man of bloodshed, but still was not murder, is my point. Just so you know if you give yourself to God you do not have to worry loss of life or damage, because you know nothing you can do to make was not allowed by God and not of evil, but for its own good.
