looking for a good kitchen knife?

My husband wants a nice knife to use in the kitchen for Christmas (all we are the smallest shit). I know the KNIVES are ridiculously expensive and I have no idea how to tell what, exactly, does a good knife. Can anyone point me in the direction of a decent knife (which is not an experienced chef or anything, so you do not have to be top of the line, but should be a good knife in general) not much will it cost? I probably need a semi-big, bigger than a butter knife, but nothing ax size:) If you tell me where to find one, or give me the brand names / things to consider when buying a knife, I appreciate it!
