How old do you have to be to carry a switchblade or pocket knife or swiss army knife in public?
IT is not so much the case of age, and it differs in various states, but also the length of the blade. Certain KNIVES are illegal to carry regardless of age. They are classified concealed weapons.
There is not a legal age in which a person can carry a traditional pocketknife. The law states the act of carrying an “open bladed cutting instrument or a knife which opens by spring, lever, or any such devise (switchblade) shall be considered a misdemeanor.
Most schools will expel for carrying any kind of knife. When you are in public, the type of knife is the deciding factor. Don’t try to take any knife aboard an airplane.
In Texas – for example – no age limit is defined. Folding Knives have to be under 5.5 inches. Maximum length of straight blades is 5.5″ Specifically illegal: Switchblade, throwing knives, Daggers (in general), bowie knives, SWORDS and spears.
Nothing about an age limit. Just do not bring them into government/publicly owned places. (Courthouses, Schools, Schoolbuses… etc.)
New York is among the strictest. It is illegal to possess any kind of knife, box cutter, etc. by anyone younger than 16. More laws are in place until the age of 22. After that, the intent of the wearer / owner comes into the equation. Basically, an old guy can carry a pocket knife as long as he doesn’t intend to harm anyone.
British Army/Navy issue pocket knife.
