How to sharpen KNIVES?
I just bought a new pocket knife and there is a slot on the handle that is showing part of the blade so that it can be used as a seatbelt cutter. (it’s a rescue knife I’m taking an Emt class) the blade has a slight Curve in it but has no ridges. My question is, is there any way I can sharpen it for free at my house? I would like it to be sharp so I have no problems cutting a seatbelt or something if I need to.
If the knife is designed to be a seat belt cutter the slot that cuts the seat belt will already be sharp.Since this area will only be used in an emergency my advice would be to just leave it alone because it will almost be impossible to sharpen without some type of sharpening tool that at this moment I am not aware of.
How ever for the main knife blade I would recommend either one of these two systems. The Lansky sharpening kit – but they make two versions, the standard kit and the diamonized kit. The diamonized kit normally sells for $49 but is on sell at Academy Sporting Goods right now for $25. Be sure and get the diamonized version. The Lansky system has a guide that lets you put the exact same angle on both sides of the blade. I will work great.
The other system is a set of diamonized sharpening stones ( 4 different grits ) that can be bought at harbor freight for about $15. Then you will need a sharpening guide that attaches to the knife blade that makes sure both sides of the bevel is the same. It works on the same principal as the Lansky system, but just using a different method to do it. This knife guide is made by Buck Knife company and is the fastest and easiest method to use.
But for the finishing touch on the blades that will get them razor hair shaving sharp is to use a ceramic stick or meat steel to touch up the edge on your blade after you get through using the stones to thin down the bevel. Then when the blade seems to be dull after using it, you can hit it on the ceramic stick or meat steel and it will shave again. Using the sticks or steel will make your knife last forever and save a great deal of time for you.
Most of the time the edge of a knife blade is not really in need of sharpening when it appears “dull” but actually just needs the cutting edge of the blade “straightened ” back up by using the sticks or steel to do so.
