Pipe size of a Gandalf?

I'm thinking of carving a pipe used by Gandalf in the Lord of the Rings, as the replicas are much more expensive for me. The problem is I do not know how to go about it. So now I know I should use briar, and requiring a knife (like a Swiss Army one). But how do I make the same pipe? I know for carving, and steam to the curve of desire, but what about the mother? How I can carve through it? Any advice, or a list of instructions is greatly appreciated!

You should carve into three separate parts at least. Crown, short trunk and part of "filter", however I doubt that you can do a decent job only half with a knife. I can not think of at least five different tools size you need and buying them, probably cost you more than Gandalf `s original pipe. Give it a shot if, but try to ask all the different KNIVES.
