Why didn’t the Nazis invade Switzerland during WWII?
I know Switzerland is pretty much neutral for everything concerning war, but is that a good enough reason for Hitler not to invade it? He pretty much took over all of western Europe, why not Switzerland? Not that I have anything against Switzerland, but I look at the map and it shows all the land Hitler took over during WWII and it pretty much all red (AXIS) except for the white patch representing Switzerland.
Switzerland has a lot of good natural resources, does it not? It would be an advantage to take it over, right?
Second Question:…Does Switzerland even have an army? If so, why? They’re neutral…Then again, I bet all they equip with soldiers with a Swiss army KNIVES. Those things are wickedly cool.
Fascinating…absolutely fascinating.
Deidei,
you have some good answers above me. The treatment by the “armed neutral” Swiss (much different meaning and connotation than being “neutral”) on American downed pilots is anything but neutral. The Germans knew that if they invaded Switzerland they would be cut to pieces. The Swiss have the most active and protective underground system in the world in the defense of their nation. They are also one of the most heavily armed; being “neutral” does not by any stretch of the imagination mean being “pacifist”; it is quite the opposite.
Nazi’s were treated quite well as the American/British Airmen were often tortured in their cells. So much for their “neutrality”.
