BRAHMOS Is IT A HYPE?????
We indians are boasting so much about the BraHmos being supersonic but no body talks about the Range. It has only 290 Kms of range. With this kind of range it would take Brahmos more time to be transported to the viable range of the brahmos and then fire than the TOMAHAWK…..So what is the point of Building our whole army and the navy around the brahmos which can only boast of its Speed.. and i dont understand why no body is talking about Logistics of teh Brahmos…. clearly though the Tomahawk is subsonic it could take out a 1000 kms target quicker if the Brahmos is not being carried by a Sukhoi 30… well so can some one tell me what are we all shouting about?????????? answers from other countries are more welcome so that we can have a unbaised view.
Brahmos is a supersonic cruise missile primarily meant as an anti-ship missile. The supersonic speed(mach 2.5-2.8) means that the missile gives the target a very short time to react ; therefore it is near impossible for the enemy to shoot it down . It has a variety of trajectories(same as tomahawk), low radar signature ( stealthier than the tomahawk ) , greater desturctive capability as it has much higher kinetic energy. The same missile can be fired from all platforms ( only the airforce version is different as it has a lighter payload and tail fins for extra stability ). While the range of 290 km. is not great , the fact is that it is among the first and one of the very few supersonic cruise missiles .Besides it would be unfair to compare our missile programme with that of the US during the Cold War(during which the tomahawk was designed and produced ) as their security requirements were quite different from ours. The Americans were able to spend billions of dollars on R&D annually ; compared to them our Indian scientists operate on a shoe-string budget .
Modifications to the Range and Payload of the Brahmos missile can be made afterwards also , what was needed to be demonstrated was the technological capability. As far as i know there are plans to design a longer range version along with a hypersonic version of the Brahmos in the near future .
